• White hybrids glitter everywhere
The PANNAR white hybrid selection is characterised by good performance, adaptability and stability in all production areas for good risk management. The white maize package features exciting new top hybrids for the coming season. On the drylands of the eastern region the PAN 3A-173 and PAN 4A-111 platforms form the backbone of the PANNAR package. In the western areas the PAN 5R-791BR, PAN 5R-891BR, (MON89034) and PAN 5R-785BR (MON89034) platforms form the core of the PANNAR white hybrid package. Under irrigation the PAN 3A-173 platform is first choice.
Dryland: PAN 3R-573R is in the same stable as PAN 3A-173. Both hybrids are well-adapted for the high potential soils of the eastern production areas (Mpumalanga, Eastern Freestate, and KwaZulu-Natal) and are recommended at high plant populations of 45 000 to 60 000 plants/hectare.
High inset irrigation (high yield targets and water application demands a high management inset): As irrigation hybrid PAN 3R-573R is the peer of the yellow ultrafast hybrids and it fits successfully in the double harvest production system. It is recommended for all irrigation environments at high plant populations of 80 000 to100 000 plants/hectare.
This hybrid is a typical ultrafast plant type with upright leaf growth habit. It is not prone to form shoots and has good standing qualities. Under dryland conditions the hybrid may tend to be multi-headed. It yields a high ratio grain to leaf and stalk and is well suited for high plant populations with good general disease tolerance and good grain quality. In areas where northern leaf blight may be a factor, the YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray program is recommended to deal with the disease and protect the yield potential.
PAN 5B-491B en PAN 5R-891BR:
These hybrids carry the MON89034 stalk borer immunity genes.
Dryland: The above two hybrids originate from the same genetic background as PAN 5R-791BR with a strong multi-headed tendency and additional advantage of the protective second generation stalk-borer genes. They are well adapted for all production areas of the Northwest Freestate and Northwest Province and are strongly recommended as the nucleus of a white package, especially for the western production areas. The package is also well adapted for the eastern production areas, including the North Eastern Freestate. PAN 5R-891BR has the potential to become very popular.
• Yellow hybrids promise glittering options
This formidable yellow maize package of ultra-fast, fast and medium hybrids offer excellent options for dryland production or under irrigation. The ultra-fast package is strengthened by three new exceptional genetic platforms: PAN 3R-724BR, PAN 3R-786BR and PAN 3R-700BR, which promise a mentionable increase in yields. The new genetic platforms have already confirmed their excellent performance under irrigation and in high potential dryland production areas.
The hybrid package of fast to medium grow class is strengthened by four new exciting hybrids: The PAN 5A-182-, PAN 4R-672R– en PAN 6R-710BR platforms are especially mentioned for their excellent performance in the past production season.
PAN 3A-124, PAN 3R-524R en PAN 3R-724BR:
High input irrigation: This is the most exciting new platform with excellent performance under irrigation. PAN 3R-724BR by far gave the best performance in PANNAR’s irrigation evaluation experiments in the two past seasons. The plant type of the two hybrids make them ideal for high plant populations from 95 000 tot 100 000 plants/hectare. The hybrids excel with satisfactory yields and stability in all the production areas. PAN 3A-124 is earmarked to replace PAN 6126.
Dryland: This platform is a sound choice for high the potential regions of the eastern Highveld and KwaZulu-Natal. The plant type of these hybrids makes them ideal for high plant populations of 45 000 to 60 000 plants/hectare under dryland production conditions.
These are typical ultra-fast hybrids with upright leaf growth habit that can be planted at higher plant populations. They have a uniform cob size, which is advantageous under high potential conditions that require high plant populations. This is the fastest platform in the PANNAR range and produce an attractive quick-drying type of grain. The standing characteristic is excellent, even with high plant populations. Where leaf diseases normally surface, the YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray program is recommended.
PAN 3R-586R and PAN 3R-786BR:
High level irrigation: The above two new additions to the irrigation package have been tested stringently over many seasons and ensures exceptionally good and stable performance. You may plant them with the assurance that they will bring stability to your package. These hybrids progress quickly to flowering and physiological ripening.
Dryland: The hybrids perform well in the high potential areas of the eastern Highveld (Mpumalanga and eastern Freestate), and especially in KwaZulu-Natal. With characteristics such as strong seedlings, high tolerance against leaf diseases and good standing ability, the ultra-fast hybrids are a good choice. Plant them at least at a 20-30% higher plant population compared with the medium group hybrids (≥45 000 plants/hectare).
They are almost as fast as the previous platform and display good tolerance against leaf diseases, especially phaeosphaeria and grey leaf spot. They have good tolerance against heat stress, a welcome characteristic for the Northern Cape production areas.
PAN 3R-500R and PAN 3R-700BR:
High input irrigation: These hybrids are well adapted in all the production areas under irrigation at plant populations of 80 000 to 100 000 plants/hectare. They maintain excellent performance and stability in the PANNAR irrigation evaluation experiments. They are good team mates for PAN 3Q-740BR and PAN 3P-502R, and are aimed at replacing them. This platform yields a higher volume and quality silage.
Dryland: The hybrids are well adapted in the eastern production areas and is recommended to be planted at a 20-30% higher plant population (≥45 000 plants/hectare) than the normal dryland populations.
The hybrids are of a handsome plant type with good standing characteristics and cob placement. They yield a good quality semi-shiny kernel type of grain. Where leaf diseases normally emerge, the YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray program is recommended to protect the production potential.
Dryland: A new hybrid especially adapted for KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga en die Eastern Freestate. PAN 4A-156 is meant for high potential lands. A higher plant population is recommended as it tends to grow only one head. It has the ability to produce more rows of kernels than the average hybrids and can form up to 22 rows on a head. It teams up well with PAN 4A-172 and PAN 5A-182.
Irrigation: It fits in well where only a single maize crop is grown under irrigation or additional irrigation. A maximum plant population of 60 000 plants/hectare is recommended. It has good tolerance against leaf diseases, especially phaeosphaeria.
Dryland: This exciting new yellow hybrid is stable companion of PAN 4A-172 which came out tops in the PANNAR hybrid evaluation trials in the past two years, especially in the Eastern Freestate. The two hybrids are an excellent choice for the eastern Highveld (Mpumalanga en Eastern Freestate). They offer good agronomic balance and tend to carry cobs low on the stem. Standing ability is good.
In areas where northern leaf blight is experienced, the YIELDBOOST® fungicide spray program is recommended to keep the disease under control and protect the yield potential.
Dryland: This hybrid in the quick-growing class has good tolerance against brown-spot and an excellent yield potential. It is well adapted for the whole eastern production area and should be considered for high potential lands, where it can perform to its full potential. This agronomic well-balanced hybrid is suitable for high plant populations.
Irrigation: It is a good choice where only a single maize crop is cultivated under irrigation or additional irrigation. A plant population of maximum 70 000 plants/hectare is recommended.
PAN 5A-190 and PAN 5R-590R
Dryland: The two hybrids in the medium-fast growth class is perfectly suitable for the eastern production areas of Mpumalanga and the eastern Freestate. The big plant habit of the hybrids make then most suitable for silage production.
The hybrids offer excellent, early prolific growth, produce single cobs and has good standability. It is a very healthy plant type with general disease resistance, specifically for diplodia cob rot and tolerance for brown spot.
PAN 5A-154 and PAN 5R-554R:
Dryland: The hybrids are exciting additions to the PANNAR package. They perform outstandingly in the PANNAR cultivar evaluation program in a wide variety of environmental conditions, which indicate good yield stability and adaptability. At low plant populations the hybrids may be multi-headed.
They maintain a reasonably regular cob size with an attractive deep orange kernel type. PAN 5A-154 is a stable partner of PAN 5A-182 and is recommended as part of a yellow package to spread environmental factor risks.
Irrigation: It can be planted with major success where only a single yield under irrigation or additional irrigation is contemplated.
The hybrids have excellent standability and general disease tolerance show strong resistance against diplodia ear rot.
• Soybeans perform exemplary
PANNAR’s soybean cultivars remain top annual performers in national trials – the result of the most encompassing soybean evaluation program in South Africa. The package is a proven and safe option with unequalled stability at various yield potential levels and in different production domains. PANNAR presents a complete package of growth classes for each production area/plant date combination.
PANNAR has access to the best commercial soybean cultivars, whether developed locally or overseas. The PANNAR policy is to launch the best possible cultivars in the South African market, no matter where they come from. What is more – if a cultivar is in our cultivar series, one has peace of mind that it has already been tested by the most demanding evaluation program in South Africa.
If you are presently planting PAN 1623R you may just as well try PAN 1644R. It fits into the six growing class and is ideal as additional cultivar in a soybean package in the moderate and warm dryland areas. Although many of the characteristics are similar to PAN 1623R, it has a few improved traits that make it an even better all-rounder.
This is a cultivar with narrow leaves, similar to the the old well-known PAN 737R. The narrow leaf form allows better light penetration in the plant row. It is a shorter plant type than the other cultivars in the medium and later growing classes, has good standability and is widely adapted. It fits in the six growing class, suitable for planting in the moderate and warm dryland production regions. PAN 1644R and PAN 1653R are good as supplementary cultivars with the settled stalwarts, PAN 1521R and PAN 1623R.
PAN 1521R and PAN 1623R are two proven cultivars with exceptional performance and stability. They are supported by PAN 1532R, a slightly faster alternative, and the two new cultivars: PAN 1644R en PAN 1653R.
• Wheat is the cock of the walk
PANNAR presents a formidable wheat package for production on dryland and under irrigation. The excellent results in the national trials of the ARC’s Small Grain Institute confirms the excellent yield potential, stability and adaptability in the various production areas.
PANNAR is literally a “one-stop seed supplier” in the various irrigation areas. The package with spring types boasts with high yield potential irrigation cultivars which can be divided into three growth classes namely: Medium late, medium and medium fast. The package consists of PAN 3497, PAN 3471, PAN 3541 and PAN 3400.
PAN 3497, with its somewhat longer growth period than PAN 3471, is more suitable for early planting. PAN 3400, with its short growth period and excellent yield potential, is ideal for later planting.
PAN 3541 is a new medium growth-season cultivar earmarked as the new flagship and to replace PAN 3471 in future. PAN 3541 sets a new standard for yield in the medium growth class and further provides good straw strength, standability and tolerance against the prevailing streak disease and leaf mould patotypes. The PANNAR package is a compulsive choice for the irrigation farmer.
