ProAgri’s maize cultivar name series – PIONEER® leads the field with new maize cultivars

The first seed company in ProAgri’s series of maize seed names is PIONEER®; a well-known name in the agricultural environment.

In 2012/2013 PIONEER® introduced a new naming system for their maize cultivars to enable the farmer to recognise at a glance what could be expected of each cultivar.

What is VRV?

Usually it is difficult to determine the comparative full-grown and harvest moisture status of competing cultivars. With the VRV grading it is possible to compare PIONEER® cultivars with competing cultivars.

New white cultivars for the western dryland production region

Johan Kock, PIONEER® product agriculturalist, tells more about the company itself and of the new cultivars for dryland production in the West:

Operational discipline, such as the adherence to technological agreements, the cultivation of refuge lands, and the ethical application of the IPM program, is regarded as high priorities.”

It is against this background that PIONEER® is introducing two new white cultivars – P2865WBR and P2927WYR.


This is a white cultivar with a medium to long growing season and was specifically developed for the Western production regions.

In Figure 1 the black line represents P2865WBR = 0. It is clear that there is a 2,05% improvement in yield when it is compared with P2864WYR, which has the same basic genetics. P2865WBR has new technology (VTP Mon89), which might add to the advantage. Should the contamination pressure by the maize stalk borer be high enough, it will result in the retention of the grain quality as no resistance against the new technology has been reported as yet.

The recordings in Figure 2 indicates that P2865WBR is agronomical acceptable for the dryland regions that it was specifically bred. It is a typically multi-ear plant. An average of 1,82 ears per plant have been counted in 22 locations. Consequently it is well adapted for plant populations which vary from 18 000 tot 25 000 plants in lower potential soils. It also does well in higher potential soils when 28 000 to 32 000 plants/ha is cultivated. The grain is of a high quality with a bushel weight of 74,67 kg/HL. The germination stage of the P2865WBR is quick, even and uniform, which results in plants with excellent standing ability. Placing of ears is approximately 50% of the plant length, which indicates a balanced plant type that will harvest without trouble. P2865WBR shows acceptable to strong resistance against most leaf and ear diseases.

This is a medium to long growing season white variety developed particularly for the Western production region.

In Figure 3 the black line represents P2927WYR = 0. It is clear that there is a 5,59% improvement in yield compared with P2864WYR, which serves as genetics criterion (55 locations). This represents pronounced genetic advance compared with the existing performance of PIONEER® products in this concept. Both cultivars in the equation have Mon810 technology. In this instance similar technology is compared. This makes the performance all the more remarkable. The addition of the new technology to P2927WYR in coming years is indeed something to look forward to.

The agronomic recordings in Figure 4 indicates that P2927WYR is acceptable agronomical for the dryland production which it was bred for. The cultivar performs extremely well in both high and low potential conditions. The plant is multi-headed. An average of 1,94 heads per plant has been counted in 42 locations. Consequently it is well-adapted for plant populations of 18 000 to 25 000 plants in all soils. In higher potential soils the plant population can be increased to 28 000 and even 32 000 plants/ha. The grain is of outstanding quality with a bushel weight of 76,44 kg/HL. P2927WYR germinates fast and uniformly. This results in plants with outstanding growing vitality and eventual standing ability. As a result it is a plant that is easy on the eye and will harvest problem free. P2927WYR shows acceptable to strong tolerance against the most leaf and ear diseases.

Figure 4 indicates that P2927WYR is acceptable agronomical.

P2865WBR and P2927WYR are new cultivars in the PIONEER® product series which were bred and developed for dryland production in the Western dryland production region. Both have distinctive yield potential and agronomic characteristics in respect of the compulsory placing of these products in any white maize package.
