What is Integrated Plant Energy Management (IPEM)?
There are different stages in the growing cycle of a crop where it requires more energy than what can be supplied from own reserves. In grain production, it occurs with initiation when it moves from vegetative to the reproductive stage. With vegetables, perennials and trees it occurs during flowering, fruit set (cell division) and fructescense (ripening).
Should there not be provided in this unique energy requirement, the plant may experience an “energy crisis”. This so-called metabolic stress is where the susceptibility to disease-causing organisms and insect attack increases due to a lack of available energy to sustain the enzymatic/hormone system of the plant. These systems are responsible for optimum metabolism and defence against disease-causing organisms.
How to optimise plant energy
This can be achieved by focusing on the following essential plant/crop components:
- Enzymatic systems;
- Calcium and its functional components; and
- Functional and available carbon (-COOH).
The addition of an excellent natural organic substance interchanging product, functional carbon
(-COOH) and CA++, repairs the balance of the plant’s energy curve.
This more active and balanced metabolism has the following biological result in the plant:
- More enzyme activation for metabolic changes and absorption of nutrients;
- An increase of hormone activity as a result of the above;

As a result of these changes in the plant’s metabolism there is a marked increase in the production of glucose, sugar, starch and amino acids. This represents an excellent environment for optimum flowering, fruit-set and eventually improved yield and extended shelf-life.
